Golden Gate Park San Francisco

Museums, gardens, lakes, bison, windmills, hidden trails and more than 1,000 acres of San Francisco to explore.

Golden Gate Park stretches roughly three miles from the Haight-Ashbury side of San Francisco toward
Ocean Beach.
What looks like one giant park on a map is really a neighborhood-sized collection of museums, gardens, lakes, recreation areas, historic landmarks and wonderfully unusual San Francisco attractions.

Why Golden Gate Park Is So Much More Than a Park

Golden Gate Park is one of those San Francisco places where “we’ll stop by for an hour” can quickly turn into half a day.

Inside its 1,017 acres you’ll find world-class museums, formal gardens, lakes, waterfalls, playgrounds, sports fields, historic windmills, redwood groves, art studios and even a herd of American bison.

And here’s the particularly amazing part: much of this landscape was once windswept sand dunes. Beginning in the 1870s, engineers, gardeners and generations of park workers transformed western San Francisco into one of America’s great urban parks.

LOCAL TIP: Don’t think of Golden Gate Park as one attraction. Think of it as a collection of attractions spread across a three-mile-long park. Decide what you most want to see before arriving.

How Golden Gate Park Was Created

From Sand Dunes to City Park

In the 19th century, much of western San Francisco consisted of shifting coastal sand dunes and scrubland known as the Outside Lands.

As the city expanded after the Gold Rush, San Francisco wanted a major public park comparable to the grand urban parks being created elsewhere in the country.

William Hammond Hall

Engineer William Hammond Hall became one of the key figures in the park’s early development. The first challenge wasn’t deciding where to put lawns and museums—it was figuring out how to stabilize blowing sand long enough for plants to grow.

John McLaren

Scottish-born horticulturist John McLaren later spent decades shaping Golden Gate Park’s heavily planted, naturalistic character.

The 1894 Midwinter Exposition

The California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894 transformed the central portion of Golden Gate Park and left a lasting cultural legacy.

THE BIG TAKEAWAY: Golden Gate Park looks natural today, but much of what visitors see is the result of generations of landscape engineering, horticulture and city planning.

Getting Around

Walking works well within individual areas, but Golden Gate Park is long enough that biking, transit or the park shuttle can be useful when covering multiple sections.

Parking

The Music Concourse underground garage is particularly convenient for the California Academy of Sciences, de Young Museum, Japanese Tea Garden and Music Concourse.

SAN FRANCISCO PARKING TIP: Never leave luggage, shopping bags, electronics or other valuables visible inside a parked vehicle.

Public Transportation

Golden Gate Park is served by several Muni routes. Because the park stretches for miles, map the specific attraction you want to visit rather than simply entering “Golden Gate Park” as your destination.

What to Wear

Western San Francisco can be noticeably cooler and foggier than downtown. Bring layers even during summer.

Light jacket or sweatshirt

Comfortable walking shoes

Water

Sunscreen

Layers you can add or remove

DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE DISTANCE: Attractions that look close together on a tourist map may involve a surprisingly long walk.

Shakespeare Garden

Tucked beside the California Academy of Sciences, Shakespeare Garden is one of Golden Gate Park’s most intimate formal spaces. Established in 1928, it brings together plants associated with Shakespeare’s plays and poetry in a quiet brick-and-green setting that feels removed from the larger museum district only steps away.

Visitor update: The garden is a free outdoor park space. It is also a popular permitted wedding venue, so temporary event use can occasionally limit the quiet experience visitors expect.

A Literary Garden Established in 1928

The garden was created in 1928 as a horticultural tribute to William Shakespeare and the plant imagery that appears throughout his works.

Botanical expertise helped shape the original collection, linking literature with Golden Gate Park’s broader tradition of plant experimentation and education.

Plants From Shakespeare’s World

The garden has traditionally featured flowers and trees connected to Shakespeare’s plays, sonnets and poems. Roses, violets, lilies, poppies and other familiar plants help turn literary references into a real landscape.

Plantings change over time, so visitors should think of the garden as a living interpretation rather than a fixed checklist of every species ever mentioned by Shakespeare.

The Shakespeare Bust & Garden Character

Weddings, Quiet Visits & Nearby Museums

The garden is one of Golden Gate Park’s popular wedding locations. If a ceremony is underway, be respectful and expect temporary limits around the central space.

Japanese Tea Garden Visitor Guide

The Japanese Tea Garden is one of Golden Gate Park’s most beautiful and historically layered attractions. Winding paths, stone lanterns, bridges, water, carefully shaped plants and architectural elements create an intimate landscape that feels very different from the broad lawns and museum plazas nearby.

Golden Gate Park connection: This attraction is located inside Golden Gate Park. Use the park hub to compare museums, gardens, lakes, bison, windmills and other nearby sights before building your route.

Why Visit?

Why Japanese Tea Garden Is Worth Your Time

Visitors often arrive for the photographs and stay for the details. The garden rewards slow walking: a turn in the path can reveal a pagoda, a framed view, a koi pond or a carefully composed planting. Its history also tells a larger San Francisco story about the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition, Japanese immigrant contributions to the city and the injustice experienced by Japanese Americans during World War II.

History & Context

The Story Behind Japanese Tea Garden

The garden began as part of the Japanese Village created for the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition in Golden Gate Park. What began as a temporary fair attraction evolved into a permanent public garden.

Makoto Hagiwara became central to the garden’s development after the exposition. He and his family expanded and cared for the garden for decades, bringing plants, design ideas and objects that helped shape the landscape visitors recognize today.

During World War II, the Hagiwara family was forced from the garden amid the incarceration of Japanese Americans. The site was renamed for a period, making the garden’s history inseparable from both cultural achievement and discrimination.

The garden contains elements from different periods. Its pagoda, for example, is connected to San Francisco’s 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, while other structures and landscape features reflect later additions and restoration.

Drum Bridge

The steeply arched bridge is one of the garden’s most photographed features and encourages visitors to slow down and experience the landscape deliberately.

Tea House

A chance to pause for tea and light refreshments while looking into the garden rather than simply moving through it.

Pagoda

The multi-tiered pagoda is one of the garden’s strongest vertical landmarks and connects the site to another chapter of San Francisco exposition history.

Stone Lanterns

Lanterns, stones and carefully positioned landscape elements help create the garden’s layered sense of discovery.

Koi Ponds & Water

Water reflections, koi and small cascades soften the sounds of the surrounding city and park.

Seasonal Plantings

Cherry blossoms, maples and other plantings make the experience noticeably different depending on the season.

Good to Know Before You Go

Helpful Visitor Tips

Visit early in the day when possible. The garden feels more contemplative before the busiest visitor period.

Allow roughly 45–90 minutes for a relaxed first visit; longer if you plan to stop for tea or photograph the garden carefully.

Do not rush the drum bridge and narrow paths. Part of the design is the change in pace and viewpoint.

Pair the garden with the de Young Museum, California Academy of Sciences and Music Concourse; all are clustered together.

Seasonal color varies, so do not build your entire visit around one flower unless you have checked current bloom conditions.

Admission policies, resident benefits and hours can change. Confirm current visitor information before going.
