The Story Behind Ocean Beach & Pacific Ocean Views
For much of early San Francisco history, the western edge of the peninsula was treated as remote Outside Lands: windswept dunes separated from the growing city by difficult terrain.
Late-19th-century railroads changed that relationship by carrying San Franciscans toward the beach, Cliff House and new amusement attractions.
Ocean Beach became part of a larger resort and entertainment district. The Cliff House, Sutro Baths, early rides and later Playland at the Beach made the western edge a major recreational destination.
After the 1906 earthquake, portions of the western city also played practical roles during recovery and temporary housing.
The resort era gradually faded. Sutro Baths disappeared, Playland closed in 1972, and the surrounding neighborhoods became far more residential—but Ocean Beach remained a defining public landscape.
