San Francisco Attraction Guide
Nob Hill & Grace Cathedral
Nob Hill combines old San Francisco wealth, dramatic hills, cable cars, luxury hotels and Grace Cathedral’s Gothic architecture. The neighborhood tells a story of railroad fortunes, the 1906 earthquake and fire, rebuilding and the creation of one of the city’s most recognizable hilltop districts.
Why It Is Called Nob Hill
In the late 19th century, wealthy railroad and business magnates built enormous mansions on the hill. “Nob” was slang for a wealthy or socially prominent person, and the nickname stuck.
Railroad Barons and Mansions
Families associated with the Central Pacific Railroad and other major fortunes built lavish homes here, including the Crockers, Stanfords, Huntingtons and Floods. Their mansions turned the hill into a symbol of Gilded Age wealth.
The 1906 Earthquake and Fire
The earthquake damaged Nob Hill, but the fires that followed destroyed most of the great mansions. The Fairmont Hotel’s shell survived and was rebuilt, while the Flood Mansion became another major survivor.
Grace Cathedral
Grace Cathedral traces its history to earlier Episcopal congregations in San Francisco. A previous Grace Church burned in the 1906 fire. The Crocker family later donated their Nob Hill block for a new cathedral site.
Building the Cathedral
The cornerstone was laid in 1910, but construction continued in stages for decades. The present cathedral began taking shape in the late 1920s, opened partially in the 1930s and was largely completed and consecrated in the 1960s.
What to See Inside Grace Cathedral
Highlights include Gothic-inspired architecture, stained glass, an Aeolian-Skinner organ, the Interfaith AIDS Chapel, art installations and two labyrinths. The cathedral has also hosted major religious, civic and cultural events.
Cable Cars and Historic Hotels
California Street cable cars cross Nob Hill, while the Fairmont, Mark Hopkins and Huntington hotels reinforce the neighborhood’s long connection with luxury travel.
The Big Four and Gilded Age Nob Hill
Nob Hill’s reputation was built by railroad wealth. The so-called Big Four of the Central Pacific era—Leland Stanford, Collis P. Huntington, Mark Hopkins and Charles Crocker—helped turn the summit into an enclave of mansions, clubs and elite hotels.
Their homes were designed to be seen. Nob Hill became a physical display of the fortunes created by railroads, mining, banking and western expansion.
1906: A Neighborhood Rewritten by Fire
The earthquake did not erase Nob Hill by itself; the fires that followed did most of the destruction. Mansion after mansion burned. The surviving shells and buildings later became anchors for a rebuilt district focused more on hotels, clubs and institutions than private palaces.
Grace Cathedral’s Labyrinths and Art
Grace Cathedral is known for two labyrinths inspired by the medieval labyrinth at Chartres Cathedral. Visitors use them for meditation and reflection. The cathedral also contains stained glass, murals, sculpture, an important pipe organ and an Interfaith AIDS Chapel.
Its doors are associated with replicas of Lorenzo Ghiberti’s famous Renaissance baptistery doors from Florence, giving the cathedral another layer of art-historical interest.
Nob Hill by Cable Car
The California Street cable car is one of the most satisfying ways to reach the neighborhood. It turns the steep grade into part of the attraction and connects Nob Hill directly with the Financial District and Van Ness corridor.
Sample Nob Hill Visit
Ride the California Street cable car uphill, visit Grace Cathedral and Huntington Park, then walk past the Fairmont and Mark Hopkins hotels. Continue downhill toward Chinatown or Union Square to make gravity work in your favor.
Photography Tips
Grace Cathedral photographs best from Huntington Park and from angles that show its twin towers rising above the hill. Inside, stained glass, labyrinths and long nave perspectives provide very different compositions. Be respectful during services and private events.
Accessibility and Hills
Nob Hill is genuinely steep. The California Street cable car is not just charming—it is practical. Visitors with mobility limitations should minimize uphill walking and verify current cathedral accessibility before visiting.
Planning Your Visit
How to Plan Your Visit
Allow 1–2 hours for Nob Hill and Grace Cathedral, longer if you take a cathedral tour or stop for a meal. The hill is steep, so cable cars are especially useful. Cathedral sightseeing hours and admission policies can change, so verify current details before visiting.
