A Tribute to Heroes

In the heart of San Francisco’s iconic Golden Gate Park lies a hidden gem that pays tribute to the heroes who sacrificed their lives during the Spanish-American War and World War I. The Redwood Memorial Grove, a serene and solemn place, stands as a living memorial to honor these brave soldiers.

A Historic Dedication

In 1919, a moving ceremony drew over 12,000 people, many dressed in mourning black, to dedicate this grove to the memory of those who served in World War I, which had just concluded seven months prior. It was a poignant moment in history, and the first tree specifically dedicated to these heroes was planted, adorned with a small American flag.

The Triangular Oasis

Covering a triangular-shaped 15-acre plot, the Redwood Memorial Grove is a tranquil sanctuary within the bustling park. The grove is home to noble evergreen coastal redwoods, also known as coastal sequoias (Sequoia sempervirens), which were lovingly dedicated by the Gold Star Mothers organization.

A Hidden Beauty

While many visitors to Golden Gate Park may notice the adjacent meadow and the Doughboy Statue with its laurel wreath, the Redwood Memorial Grove often escapes their attention. However, this grove, planted in 1930 in memory of war casualties, has grown over the years to form a dense and shady haven.

Whether you’re a local San Franciscan or a curious traveler exploring the city, the Redwood Memorial Grove offers a peaceful spot for reflection and remembrance. Its towering redwoods, planted with love and respect, stand as living symbols of the sacrifices made by the soldiers who served our nation during times of conflict.

Wandering the Presidio: A Fun Guide to San Francisco’s Military Past and Present

Are you ready for some San Fran-tastic fun? Look no further than the Presidio, a hidden gem nestled in the north-western corner of the city. This historic military post turned national park has a rich history, stunning natural beauty, and a variety of attractions to explore. In this guide, we’ll take you on a journey through the Presidio, covering everything from its fascinating history to the flora and fauna you might encounter, along with details on how to get there and what to see and do.

History

The Presidio of San Francisco has a storied past that dates back to 1776 when it was originally established as a Spanish fort. Over the years, it changed hands from Spanish to Mexican control before becoming a crucial military outpost for the United States in 1846. The U.S. Army played a significant role in transforming the Presidio from barren dunes to a lush, picturesque military post. In 1962, it received recognition as a National Historic Landmark, solidifying its historical significance. In 1989, the Presidio ceased its role as an active military installation and was transferred to the National Park Service in 1994.

Today

Today, the Presidio welcomes visitors with open arms, offering a wide range of activities and attractions to enjoy. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, history buff, or just seeking a relaxing day out, there’s something for everyone.

What to See and Do

Hiking and Scenic Overlooks: The Presidio boasts numerous hiking trails and scenic overlooks that provide breathtaking views of the bay, Pacific Ocean, city, and more. Don’t miss Immigrant Point Overlook for panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Inspiration Point for a unique perspective of the Presidio, Palace of Fine Arts, Alcatraz, and the bay.

House of Air: For a dose of adventure and fun, check out the House of Air, where you can jump on trampolines to your heart’s content.

Walt Disney Family Museum: Dive into nostalgia at the Walt Disney Family Museum, where you can explore the life and early works of Walt Disney.

San Francisco National Cemetery: Pay your respects at the San Francisco National Cemetery, a serene final resting place for over 30,000 military veterans with picturesque bay views.

Presidio Golf Course: If golf is your game, the Presidio Golf Course offers 18 scenic holes with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, the San Francisco Bay, and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.

Transit Cafe: When hunger strikes, head to the Transit Cafe for casual dining options and enjoy outdoor seating with unbeatable views of the San Francisco Bay.

Presidio Visitor Center: Explore the heart of the park on the Main Post at the Presidio Visitor Center. Discover interactive exhibits about the Presidio’s history and a calendar of upcoming park events.

You might even catch a glimpse of Lucasfilm employees discussing their latest projects (with names carefully omitted, of course). Be sure to check out the iconic Yoda Fountain, a must-see for Star Wars fans.

Flora and Fauna

The Presidio isn’t just about its history and attractions; it’s also home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. Keep your eyes peeled for:

Birds: The park is a haven for birds like red-tailed and red-shouldered hawks, wild parrots, pelicans, and more.

Mammals: Encounter raccoons, foxes, and even coyotes. Remember to admire them from a distance and let them enjoy their natural habitat.

Marine Life: If you’re lucky, you might spot dolphins and porpoises swimming near Baker Beach.

Native Plants: The Presidio’s National Park Service actively works to maintain native plants, removing invasive species to protect endangered native flora like the San Francisco Lessingia and Raven’s Manzanita.

Getting Here and Getting Around

Getting to the Presidio is a breeze. You can hop on the 28 MUNI bus or take advantage of the free PresidiGo Shuttle, which provides easy access to different areas within the park. Once you’re there, feel free to hop on and off the shuttle to explore all the Presidio has to offer.

Weather

The Presidio is known for its fog, especially in the summer months. While downtown San Francisco might be sunny, the Presidio can be enveloped in mist. Weather conditions can change rapidly, so it’s advisable to dress in layers, allowing you to adjust to the changing climate. Whether the sun is shining or fog is rolling through the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, it’s an experience you won’t want to miss.

So, pack your picnic, lace up those hiking boots, and get ready for a day of adventure at the Presidio. Happy adventuring, and enjoy your journey through this San Francisco treasure!

A Bit of Lombard Street History:

Lombard Street was originally built in 1922 with a 27% grade, making it difficult for cars to navigate and decreasing property value.

City engineer Clyde Healy redesigned the street with 8 switchbacks and a 16% grade, making it more accessible to automobiles and raising property value for landowners.

The crooked portion of Lombard Street was a two-way street until 1939.

Today, Lombard Street is a one-way street heading eastward from Hyde to Leavenworth Street and is a popular destination for tourists, with the best views at the intersection of Leavenworth and Lombard Street. Tour buses are prohibited on the crooked portion of the street and visitors are encouraged to be respectful of the homes and properties on the street.

Are you ready for a wild ride through one of San Francisco’s most iconic streets? Look no further than Lombard Street! Known as the “crookedest street” in the world, this winding road is a must-see destination for visitors from around the globe.

First things first, the views! As you navigate through the eight hairpin turns, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the San Francisco Bay and the city skyline. It’s the perfect spot to snap some Instagram-worthy shots. But don’t just take our word for it, make sure to stop at the intersection of Leavenworth and Lombard Street for the best view of the street.

But what makes Lombard Street so “crooked”? Well, let’s take a trip down memory lane. The street was originally built in 1922 with a 27% grade, making it difficult for cars to navigate and decreasing property value. But fear not, the city engineer Clyde Healy had a plan and redesigned the street with 8 switchbacks and a 16% grade, making it more accessible to automobiles and raising property value for landowners.

Now, you might be thinking “that’s all well and good, but what about the tourists?” Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. The wait to drive down Lombard Street during peak tourist season can range from 30-45 minutes on an average day, so if you’re short on time, a walk down the street’s 250 steps is a great alternative. And don’t worry about the tour buses, they’re prohibited on the crooked portion of Lombard Street.

But, as they say, with great beauty comes great responsibility. Out of consideration to the residents, please remember to be respectful of the homes’ bushes, sculptures, and general premises. And remember, the crooked portion remains a one-way eastward street heading downhill from Hyde to Leavenworth Street. So, put on your seatbelt, hold on tight and enjoy the ride!

Exploring the Historic Fishing Fleet at Fisherman’s Wharf

When you stroll along San Francisco’s iconic Fisherman’s Wharf, you’re not just experiencing a bustling tourist destination; you’re stepping into a rich maritime history that stretches back to the 1800s. Let’s dive into the captivating world of the historic fishing fleet at Fisherman’s Wharf, filled with intriguing facts about the original fishermen, the evolution of fishing boats, and a mouthwatering dish that’s become a San Francisco tradition.

6 Facts About the Original Fishermen of Fisherman’s Wharf

The original fishermen who called Fisherman’s Wharf home were a unique bunch, and their legacy still thrives today through their descendants. Here are some fascinating facts about these early pioneers:

Italian Immigrant Roots: The first-generation Italian immigrants who settled in Fisherman’s Wharf knew how to do more than just fish. They were known for their singing prowess and could belt out a Verdi aria, even in the thickest fog outside the Golden Gate.

Weather Wisdom: Forget the weather app; these fishermen had their own way of predicting the weather. If the moon was in the east, it signaled the incoming tide. In the west, it meant the tide was flowing out. A circle around the moon? Get ready for rain. And if porpoises were frolicking around the boat, that was a warning sign of impending bad weather.

Feluccas: The fishing boats of yore, called feluccas, were constructed in a style reminiscent of the boats in their Italian homeland. These charming vessels were typically painted green and often bore the name of a patron saint on their hulls.

Creative Commuting: When the fishermen needed a ride home, they didn’t hail a taxi. Instead, they’d throw a grappling hook into the rudder chain of passing steamers and shout back with colorful language when the crew on those steamers expressed their frustration.

Modest Earnings: Life for these early fishermen was tough. In the early days of Fisherman’s Wharf, the average fisherman earned a meager $2 to $5 a week. To put it in perspective, a loaf of bread could be bought for less than five cents back then.

Singing Through the Fog: In the fog-shrouded waters outside the Golden Gate, singing wasn’t just for entertainment; it was a means of communication. You couldn’t see nearby boats in the fog, but you could tell they were there by the songs of their captains.

The Evolution of Fishing Boats: From Feluccas to Diesel-Powered Craft

The fishing fleet at Fisherman’s Wharf has seen remarkable transformations over the years. Here’s a glimpse into the evolution of these seafaring vessels:

Feluccas: The original fishing boats, feluccas, with their lateen-rigged sails and traditional design, were a common sight in San Francisco Bay. These charming green boats with patron saint names on their hulls were the hallmark of the early fishing community.

Monterey Hull Boats: With the introduction of gasoline engines came the “second-generation” of fishing boats known as Monterey Hull boats. These small but dependable vessels made it possible to fish more days of the year, extended the range of operation, and provided power for hauling in nets and lines. They were like the Model-Ts of the sea.

Diesel-Powered Craft: Today, a “third generation” of commercial fishing boats dominates the scene. These diesel-powered craft are larger, offer greater cruising capacity, and often feature state-of-the-art technology. They stand alongside the Monterey Hull boats, a testament to the evolution of fishing technology.

Chowin’ Down on Cioppino: A Taste of San Francisco’s Seafood Heritage

No visit to Fisherman’s Wharf is complete without indulging in a steaming bowl of Cioppino, a dish that has deep roots in this maritime community. Here’s a delicious dive into this iconic seafood stew:

Cioppino Origins: Cioppino is a hearty seafood stew traditionally made with a medley of seafood, including fish, crab, shrimp, and sometimes even potatoes and beans. It’s cooked in a flavorful tomato-based sauce, enriched with vegetables and herbs.

Italian-American Heritage: The dish’s origins are firmly rooted in the Italian-American fishing community of Fisherman’s Wharf. It’s a testament to the resourcefulness of these fishermen, who used the day’s catch to create a comforting and hearty stew that has since become a San Francisco tradition.

Weathering the Seas and Passing on Tradition

In the early days of Fisherman’s Wharf, the fishermen relied on nature to forecast the weather, rowed their boats in calm seas, and even hitched rides on passing steamers to get home. Despite the challenges and meager earnings, they persevered, passing down their maritime heritage to the present generation.

Today, Fisherman’s Wharf continues to be a vibrant hub of activity, thanks to the grandsons and great-grandsons of those early fishermen. It’s a place where tradition meets modernity, where the echoes of Italian arias still linger, and where Cioppino warms the hearts of locals and visitors alike. So, the next time you’re at Fisherman’s Wharf, take a moment to appreciate the rich history and culinary delights that this iconic San Francisco destination has to offer.

The Sweet Genesis: Domenico Ghirardelli’s Journey

Our story begins with Domenico Ghirardelli, born in Rapallo, Italy, in 1817. From a young age, Ghirardelli displayed a keen interest in the confectionery business. He embarked on a journey that would eventually take him across continents and lead to the creation of a chocolate empire.

Italy to South America: Ghirardelli served as an apprentice to a Genoa confectioner in Italy. However, he soon set out for South America, landing in Uruguay at the age of 20.

Sailing to Peru: Ghirardelli’s adventurous spirit led him to sail around Cape Horn to Peru, where he became a coffee and chocolate merchant. This was the beginning of his love affair with chocolate.

Gold Rush Beckons: Ghirardelli’s chocolate journey took an unexpected turn when his neighbor in Lima, James Lick, headed to San Francisco in January 1848. Lick, carrying 600 pounds of Ghirardelli’s chocolate, arrived just days before the first wave of gold-rush pioneers.

Joining the Gold Rush: Tempted by Lick’s tales of the gold rush, Ghirardelli joined him in San Francisco a year later. Here, he opened a general store offering not only chocolate but also a variety of provisions, including mustard, coffee, and spices.

Ghirardelli Chocolate: The Legacy Begins

Ghirardelli’s passion for chocolate and his entrepreneurial spirit led to the establishment of the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company, which would go on to become a household name known for its exceptional quality.

Multiple Locations: Between 1852 and 1895, Ghirardelli’s Chocolate Factory found itself at four different locations in San Francisco, constantly expanding its operations to meet the growing demand for its delectable products.

The Iconic Site: The Ghirardelli Chocolate Company’s legacy is deeply intertwined with the site that now houses Ghirardelli Square. The company took over the Pioneer Woolen Mills on North Point Street, which today stands as the Ghirardelli Chocolate Manufactory & Soda Fountain and Ghirardelli Square.

The Transformation of Ghirardelli Square

The Bay Lights, oh my goodness gracious! Have you seen it? If not, you’re missing out on one of the most spectacular light shows in all of San Francisco. This monumental light sculpture, created by the one and only artist Leo Villareal, is made up of 25,000 individually programmed white LED lights that create a never-ending, dazzling display across the north side of the Bay Bridge west span. It’s so big, it’s 1.8 miles wide and 500 feet high, and can be seen from all over the city!

When the Bay Lights first made their debut as a temporary artwork back in 2013, they were only supposed to be up for two years. But, due to their overwhelming popularity and beauty, they were made permanent in February 2016. Now, they shine bright every single night from dusk to dawn as a gift to the people of California. And the best part? It was all made possible by private donors and the nonprofit organization Illuminate. Talk about some generous folks!

But, let’s talk about some fun facts about the Bay Lights.

Did you know that each individual LED light is spaced 12 inches apart on a strand mounted on each cable? Or that the shortest bridge cable is only 2 feet long, while the longest is a whopping 240 feet? The installation is also 500 feet high, making it one of the tallest light sculptures in the world. And let’s not forget about the 100,000 feet of cable for power, fiber, and Cat 5 wires that make this spectacular display possible.

The Bay Lights have dazzled over 50 million people since their debut, and they’re not done yet. With each $100 donation to Illuminate, you can dedicate a light in the Bay Lights to honor a friend, family member, or even a pet. Your dedication will become a permanent fixture, shining for years to come, and will also support Illuminate in creating new and inspiring works of accessible public art.

But, the Bay Lights aren’t the only spectacular display of art in San Francisco. The Illuminate Festival features over 40 installations in 17 neighborhoods, with over 30 artists. So, grab your friends and family, and make a night of it. Start at the Bay Lights, and make your way around the city to see all the amazing works of art.

In conclusion, the Bay Lights are an absolute must-see in San Francisco. Not only are they a spectacular display of art, but they also represent the generosity and creativity of the community. So, make sure to add them to your bucket list, and while you’re at it, check out the rest of the Illuminate Festival. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
